This time around it’s a close-run thing. You could make the argument in any direction, as each of the big three gave reason to celebrate. However, that’s a fairly dull way to look at it. If we were forced to choose one over another, here’s how I think they’d stack up.
In third place – PlayStation
A disclaimer, before we get going: I wouldn’t say that Sony had a bad show by any means. If you’re going purely on the games they showed off, it was a strong outing. Uncharted 4 and Bloodborne have generated a huge amount of interest, and that’s for good reason.
That said, I’m not certain PlayStation nailed immediacy in quite the same way as its rivals. Most of its big hitters are still a way off. Worse, I’m not sure what we’re supposed to be excited about for this holiday season beyond LittleBigPlanet 3. Their press conference didn’t do much to alleviate that concern.
A bonus was their forward thinking, though. Demonstrating that they’re committed to PlayStation Now, PS TV and the Project Morpheus VR headset, I’d bet my bottom dollar that the former two are an indication of where the industry is going in the next decade or so.
In second place – Nintendo

Who ‘won’ E3? Besides chatter surrounding newly unveiled games, it’s the most-asked question of any show.

Nintendo pulled that out of the bag and no mistake. Having opted out of a traditional press conference this year, this veteran company showed that they weren’t a footnote to be forgotten at the end of a long E3.
Clothes-lining us with multiple announcements, loyal users were treated to first looks at The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox, Splatoon, Captain Toad’s Treasure Tracker, Bayonetta 2 and more on Wii U. Those who say there’s nothing to be excited for on the console have just been served.
Light-hearted, to the point and intent on pleasing fans, I can’t find much wrong with Nintendo’s effort this year. Considering how many people I’ve seen vowing to pick up a Wii U based on their performance this week, I’d say that was a rousing victory for an organisation many of us were counting out.
The winner – Xbox
I’ve got a lot of admiration for the new-look Xbox team. Rallying magnificently after their missteps last year, E3 2014 offered us a next-gen console making all the right moves.
Bowling strikes one after the other with the reveal of exclusives, upcoming projects and significant time given to third-party franchises, Microsoft’s press conference was a tight and well-judged return to form. Demonstrating that it could not only lay claim to favourites such as Crackdown but a great place to play titles like The Witcher 3 as well, I think you’d be more than justified in considering the Xbox One as your system of choice.
Because of this, I reckon I’d give the gong to Microsoft this time around. It was a close-run thing between them and Nintendo, but in the end I’m of the mind that they had the best all-round show in terms of covering every base. Long may it continue.
