It’s been possible to use your PlayStation 4 controller with your PlayStation 3 for a while now, but it has always required a USB Micro cable. A recent update to the PlayStation 3, however, has changed that. The DualShock 4 controller can now be used as a generic Bluetooth device, allowing it to be used wirelessly.
Here’s how to get it working:
After updating your PlayStation 3, you’ll want to plug the controller in via the aforementioned USB Micro cable. Head to the Accessory Settings menu and find the Manage Bluetooth Devices option. Scan for Bluetooth devices, at which point your PlayStation 3 should see the controller. You’ll then unplug the controller and hold down the Share and PS buttons. Then plug the controller back in and select ‘Wireless controller’ and disconnect the cord.
It’s not perfect, though. Rumble doesn’t work and neither does Sixaxis, and not all games work. You can, however, power on the PlayStation 3 with the controller once it is synced up. Eurogamer points out that Gran Turismo 6 doesn’t work, while Dark Souls 2 does. A forum member on PlayStation Trophies has been working on a list of compatible titles.
I lost my PlayStation 3 to a lightning storm, so I haven’t verified it myself, but multiple users in the initial Reddit thread have gotten it working. While people have criticized the battery life on the DualShock 4, it’s of almost unanimous agreement that the sticks and triggers are a substantial improvement over the DualShock 3. Even without rumble in place, this will be a big draw for some PlayStation 3 players.
