Earlier this year in May, Google and Asus took wraps off an HDMI dongle called Chromebit. Despite a pocket-sized design, the Chromebit is essentially a Chromebook crammed inside an HDMI dongle. It can transform any TV or monitor with an HDMI port into a computer.
Priced at $85 or Rs 5,300 approximately, the Chromebit packs pretty good hardware. It is powered by Rockchip 3288 ARM based processor paired with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of onboard storage. On the connectivity front, the Chromebit includes Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0 and a USB 2.0 port too. It runs on Chrome OS.
The USB 2.0 port can either be used to connect peripherals such as a mouse or keyboard, a USB pen drive or an external hard disk. Chrome OS is a cloud-based, lightweight operating system. It’s ideal for basic tasks such as web browsing, listening to music and watching videos, among others. Users can also create Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations.
The Chromebit will initially be available in the US at retailers such as Amazon and others. In the coming months, it will also be made available in countries such as Finland, Japan, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Denmark, Spain, Taiwan, Sweden, Norway and the UK. However, the pricing and availability details for India aren’t known yet.
