Sony Asks Which PS2 Games People Want On PS4, How About All Of Them?

In a recent Tweet, Sony asked what PS2 games people want made available via the new PS4 emulation setup. How about all of them?

Now, to clarify, I am talking about disc-based emulation here. As in, if you have a collection of old PS2 games then you should be able to play with them on your PS4 (ideally, regardless of region too).

As for digital releases though, all prior Archive titles that were available on the PS3 should also be available on the PS4. If you have already paid for the game on PS3 then that should be also carried over free of charge to the PS4.

This kind of carry over between platforms already happened with PSone Archive titles between the PS3, Vita and PSP. So there’s already a precedent in terms of store based functionality as well as the technical support for these games.

If Sony is going down the route of monetizing games that have already been released on PS3 or locking out disc- based emulation, then that is a deeply cynical and exploitative move on their part. It also gives Microsoft a huge advantage in terms of their setup, as their backwards compatibility approach with 360 games is more open and user friendly.
Sony could really take the lead here over Microsoft MSFT -1.85% but this strategy of new money for old rope is misguided.

However, Sony is making a big deal out of trophy support for these games. Personally, I’d rather play these games as how they were originally intended but I understand that some people really like trophies. Adding new trophy support for these games isn’t trivial either and would cost a lot to implement, both in terms of the code back end and the subsequent design based implementation.

Paying for that is entirely fair but in that case Sony should make these separate and special case trophied up PS2 games for PS4. To not open up prior PS3 purchases without this new functionality or disc-based emulation is hugely disappointing.

There’s also talk of emulating PSone games too and again I only hope that Sony opens that up properly as well.

The PlayStation brand has a hugely impressive library of games, leveraging its entirety in an open way is obviously the right thing to do here. Not only does it render the Xbox One practically meaningless as a competitor but it gives fresh utility to old gaming collections.

If only Sony would take a leaf out of the PS2′s book for the PS4 and make backwards compatibility operate in the same all encompassing manner. It made as much sense then as it does now.
