How to record and share Skype calls

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services like Skype have proven to be affordable and effective tools to enable conversations and video calls with people all over the world. Skype is the leading and most ubiquitous VoIP service used globally and while millions use the service for personal and business calls, it is possible to record these calls and share them over the Internet as needed.

Journalists and writers often conduct interviews and conversations over Skype, some even use the service to enable podcasts where various participants call in from all over the world and weigh in on the topics at hand.

I've often had to interview subjects using Skype on my desktop or using my notebook computer. Some rules before recording any conversation, whether online or off, is to notify all parties involved that you are recording the conversation beforehand.

As a journalist, this helps me ensure I have source material to reference as I write my story. If the interview is good enough to be shared as a portion of a webcast or a downloadable file, you need to get permission for this as well. Sharing audio can be done on web-based services like SoundCloud.

As a Mac user, I've depended on Call Recorder for Skype from eCamm. This application costs $30.00 but it is truly worth it.

Once installed, Call Recorder for Skype starts up every time you open Skype so it is at the ready when you need it. Once you've tested the volume and are certain that the input and output quality for all parties is acceptable, you can record conversations at will and they're saved as MP3 audio files. You can also easily select the quality of the recording since these are available in multi-track recording mode.

Call Recorder for Skype can also record stunning, high-quality, HD video. You can record your Skype video sessions, podcasts and interviews as you see them, or in unique side-by-side and split-screen modes.

Feel like sharing? Easily convert your calls into MP3 files for podcasting or internet-ready movies for YouTube and Vimeo. Call Recorder for Skype is available as a trial, good for seven days.

Folks using PCs can check out Evaer which similarly records Skype audio and video directly to a PC.

Evaer supports Skype video calls side-by-side, separate files, local-webcam-only and remote-webcam-only mode recording directly to your hard drive. Other features include support for recording single Skype video calls, Skype screen sharing sessions and up to 10-way Skype group video calls.

A changeable recording video codec, video resolution (supports 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p, and 1080p), aspect ratio (4:3, 16:9) and frame rate and the option to record separate MP3 audio files with video calls are also available. There are a lot more features for recording audio and video off Skype from this multifunctional application. Evaer costs $19.95 for the full-featured version but a trial version is available to test for free.
