Now that the Google Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X have been unveiled, the big question for Android fans is about whether or not and when their devices will get the Android M update, also known as Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
On the Friday after the Nexus unveiling, Motorola took to its blog to announce the official list of Moto devices slated for the Android 6.0 Marshmallow upgrade. Here's the list:
2015 Moto X Pure Edition (3rd gen)
2015 Moto X Style (3rd gen)
2015 Moto X Play
2015 Moto G (3rd gen)
2014 Moto X Pure Edition in the US (2nd gen)
2014 Moto X in Latin America, Europe and Asia2 (2nd gen)
2014 Moto G and Moto G with 4G LTE2 (2nd gen)
DROID Turbo
2014 Moto MAXX
2014 Moto Turbo
Nexus 6
Notably absent from the list are either of the two generations of the super-cheap Moto E, along with the first generation Moto G and Moto X.
Motorola remained mum on the timeline for the OTA release date of Android M on these devices, saying, "As for timing, we have high standards, so we'll work fast but we won't push the upgrades out until we know they're ready. Look for more news on timing in the coming weeks."
Despite Motorola's lack of specificity on Android M OTA update release dates, it's a good bet that the Nexus 6, at the end of the list, is likely to be the first of Motorola's devices to be upgraded.
During the Nexus 6P and 5X event, Google itself announced that the Nexus family of devices (except for the first Nexus 7 tablet, the Nexus 10, and Nexus 4) would be the first to receive the OTA update rollout, starting this week.
But other Motorola devices, especially the third generation of Moto X variants, will likely have a relatively early release date for the Android 6.0 Marshmallow OTA update, compared to other Android OEMs.
That's because, as the "Pure Edition" moniker implies, Motorola phones run an almost-stock version of Android, which requires much less time for alterations and tests before each update is ready for release. Last year, the Moto X 2014 was the first non-Nexus device to receive the Android 5.0 Lollipop update OTA, in early November, with the Moto G following right behind.
