LG: Curved TV Screens Ideal For Two To Three Viewers

We recently had a team of LG's engineers from South Korea in our offices to talk about TVs and Ultra HD resolution. But we also had another mission: to pick their minds about curved designs, specifically on the firm's OLED TVs.

We were given a number of reasons as to why the curved design is a must. First of all, the curvature helps emphasise the ultra-thin (4.3 mm) frame, giving it that "piece of paper" look. You almost forget that the base measures a full 20 cm thick.

Looks are one thing, but there's also the whole "immersive experience" argument. Apparently, viewers become more immersed in their film due to the enveloping shape.

But the curve also makes light more uniformly distributed across the panel. Curved panels use less power, but the engineers told us the difference was negligible compared to the TV's overall consumption.

According to them, the curve was calculated to accommodate precisely 2.2 viewers. For the best possible picture quality on its curved OLED TVs, LG recommends being no more than three people watching, ideally only two. If you're four, a flat screen would be preferable.

LG's guys finally admitted that curved TVs as they currently exist are not ideal for all uses, such as having friends over to watch a game. But that isn't necessarily the final word; LG firmly believes in its vision of shape-shifting flexible TVs, a format that allows the user to decide when to have it flat or curved at the press of a button. Power to the people!
