No Chance God of War 4 Will Be Announced Next Week: But Expect Big Title!

Buzz around a fourth God of War instalment has been rife online since before this Summer’s E3 event, but without even a slight hint from developer SCE, it’s safe to say we aren’t getting anything any time soon. It appears to be more wishful thinking and poor research, than anything legitimate.

Rumors that the game is to be announced next weekend for example appear to be completely unfounded, and confused with David Jaffe’s Twitter and video tease for the PlayStation Experience event. While Jaffe really will be announcing a new title, it won’t be God of War because he left the franchise’s director position after God of War 2!

That’s not to say the action adventure game doesn’t deserve an update. 2010’s God of War III title is perceived by many as one of the best video games in history, averaging 92 out of 100 on Metacritic and receiving multiple gaming industry awards. It was always praised for its deep world and vast scale, something that could be pushed to new limits on the current gen hardware of the PS4 and Xbox One.

Perhaps the reluctance to get the ball rolling again was 2013’s God of War Ascension, which although was certainly fun to play, lacked any real innovation and had a weaker story than the previous games. Its Metacritic rating dropped to 80 out of 100.

Perhaps the studio want to ensure they do God of War 4 justice by giving ample time to getting core ideas brainstormed. Rushing out a current gen title, just reap profits off the name, could kill the franchise’s long term success. While waiting and bringing out a game that blows everyone away will counter any negativity from Ascension and push the franchise forward.

As for David Jaffe, although his recent teaser suggested a horror game was in the works, he noted on Twitter that this isn’t necessarily the case. Ultimately we’ll just have to wait and see what he reveals at next week’s PlayStation Experience event in Las Vegas. Other rumors suggest it will be an action title.
