Sony Looking To Launch An E-Paper Smartwatch

According to a new report coming from Bloomberg, Sony is looking to bring an innovative new e-paper powered smartwatch to the market next year. This will be different from anything we've seen in the market so far and is believed to be the result of a new division started up in the company which encourages employee ideas. The report further suggests that this wearable will come with a display and wrist band made of e-paper, which is quite unique.

Sony has been losing mobile marketshare rapidly over the past few months and has taken a bold step to cut down on smartphones in the coming year. It is said that the company plans to focus solely on high end smartphones, with not a lot of midrange devices coming from its sheds in 2015. So where would a smartwatch like accessory fare in Sony's plans to increase profits? That's not really clear at the moment as the company is yet to provide details on this device.

This alleged e-paper smartwatch could be running Sony's custom wearable OS and not Android Wear as Google's smartwatch OS is not designed for non-LCD panels. I'll be curious to see how this pans out for Sony as it has always shown promise in the smartwatch segment, long before the Samsung Galaxy Gear or Android Wear arrived in the scene.

Smartwatches are still in their infancy, despite being around for quite some time. In crucial markets like India, China etc, they're not seeing a lot of traction as these are used solely as companion devices to smartphones or tablets. There's also the cost factor to take into account which has held back prospective customers. The current crop of smartwatches are priced over Rs 15,000 in India, which is the same amount as a very capable midrange smartphone. Perhaps Sony can resolve this with this e-paper based smartwatch.
