High-end 2015 MacBook Pro is compatible with Dell’s 5K monitor

Apple’s brand new 15-inch MacBook Pro is the first and only notebook in its lineup that is compatible with Dell’s super-sharp 5K monitor. The Cupertino company confirms support on its website, but there is a catch.

If you plan to use Dell’s 27-inch UP2715K monitor with your MacBook Pro, you’re going to need to purchase the high-end model with the AMD Radeon R9 M370X graphics chip, which is priced at $2,499.

The entry-level model, priced at $1,999, has integrated Intel Iris Pro Graphics, and is not compatible.

Apple added software support for Dell’s 5K monitor with its latest OS X 10.10.3 update, but only certain machines are capable of powering it. In addition to the high-end MacBook Pro, the late 2013 Mac Pro and the 27-inch Retina 5K iMac (late 2014 or later) will work.

Because the UP2715K monitor needs more bandwidth and more power than traditional monitors, it requires a dedicated graphics chip and uses both of the DisplayPort sockets built into modern Macs.

However, most other 4K monitors, which require only one DisplayPort, are compatible with almost all Macs launched in late 2013 and later — including the Mac mini, MacBook Air, and even the new Retina MacBook.
