A brand new Android 4.4.4 KitKat update landed in the United States today as T-Mobile is now rolling out an Android 4.4.4 KitKat update to one of its popular Sony Xperia smartphones, the Sony Xperia Z1s.
In mid-June, Google pushed out an Android 4.4.4 KitKat update to Nexus smartphones and tablets that carried with it an important security patch for an OpenSSL vulnerability. The update, which followed in the footsteps of Android 4.4.3 KitKat, started hitting non-Nexus devices weeks later though the upgrade for those devices was a little bit different.
Android 4.4.4 KitKat updates for Motorola and Sony devices delivered the security patch in addition to the bug fixes found inside the Android 4.4.3 KitKat update. Motorola and Sony have been making great progress with their Android 4.4.4 KitKat update releases and today, Sony checked another Android 4.4.4 KitKat update off of its list.

It appears that the T-Mobile Sony Xperia Z1s Android 4.4.4 KitKat update has started rolling out. According to Xperia Blog, the update’s build number is 14.4.B.0.37. The update comes with a number of upgrades and enhancements on board including improvements to the device’s stability, Wi-Fi calling, reception, audio, and touchscreen. In other words, this is a crucial update for the Xperia Z1 and one that users will want to consider upgrading to.
T-Mobile Xperia Z1s users suggest that the update is available through Sony’s PC Companion application but it’s not clear if the update is rolling out Over-the-Air. Typically, we see carriers deliver both options. If the update is not available OTA, head on over to Sony’s website to pick up the Companion app for the PC.
Sony’s new Android 4.4.4 KitKat update is just another in a long line of them. In the past few weeks, we’ve seen a steady stream of Android 4.4.4 KitKat updates push out of Sony’s camp with updates deploying for the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact and the Xperia Z Ultra. Those pushes are likely the start of a much larger push this month. Several carriers including Australian carrier Telstra plan to push out Android 4.4.4 KitKat updates for Xperia devices in August.
